Hi, I have a HP Compaq dc5100 sff running Windows XP and a few weeks ago after installing Windows updates I got the error message 'unable to locate component umpnpmgr.dll' and it won't go into windows. If I press okay, the message disappears and I can't do anything else. I decided I'd better do a system recovery so tried pressing F10, this brought up a weird screen that said enter setup password. I never made a setup password, it gives me three chances and then lets me in anyway but theres no system recovery option. So I tried looking up how to get past the password and a website said to try removing the BIOS battery for 20-30 seconds which I did but it hasn't made any difference. I don't have any boots discs for it, my dad set the computer up about three years ago and I've never had to do anything like this with it. Unfortunately he lives miles away so he can't come and help me.

What do I do next? Hi: The only thing you are going to be able to do is to call HP and order a set of recovery disks if they still have them. If you live in the USA, you can call HP at 1-800-334-5144. You will need to provide the model # and serial #.
Cost for a set is $10. If HP no longer has them, you can still get them at the link below from this vendor. I think the recovery disks will work on the SFF too but you can ask them if you want. Getting rid of the BIOS password is easy if you know how. Shut down and unplug the PC. Since you already know how to access the insides of the thing, look for a green jumper on the motherboard. I can't tell you where it is because it is all over the place on different models.
Look around the perimeter of the board and near the coin cell battery. Anyway, once you find the jumper, remove it and don't lose it. Put the PC back together and start it up. Now the BIOS P/W should be removed. Shut down the PC, unplug it and place the jumper back where you got it from, put it back together again, and you're done.
If by some chance your PC has a recovery partition, you would tap the F11 key at the beginning of the HP welcome screen to launch the recovery process. F10 just gets you into the BIOS menus.
